Kenneth Rogers, 28, is charged with aggravated assault and related counts, according to authorities.

Police said it happened at the SEPTA station at 8th and Market streets around 1:15 a.m. A 46-year-old man was attacked from behind and struck on the head with a hatchet during an apparent robbery attempt, officials said.

When the victim told Rogers he only had a dollar, police said the 28-year-old attacked him again.

A passerby intervened and helped the victim "briefly gain control of the hatchet," which "prompt(ed) the offender to retaliate by stomping on the victim's face and making death threats," according to authorities.

The victim flagged down police and was hospitalized with lacerations to the head and body, officials said. Rogers fled but was arrested nearby, they added.

His bail was set at 10 percent of $750,000 and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 11, court records show.
